The sex. The lies. The lingerie. And the jealous Jewish barber. No, it's not the next reality TV show, but it sure could be.  Using Carl Sternheim's 1910 comedy, Steve Martin has reinvigorated a hilarious, laugh-out-loud farce - The Underpants. As the play opens, Theo Maske, an officious, puritanical bureaucrat, berates his wife, Louise, for allowing her titular underpants to fall to the ground at a parade for the king. Theo frets that he and Louise will be financially ruined and become social outcasts from the inevitable scandal. But before long, besotted men appear at Maske's door to rent a room - and, unnoticed by the proprietor, to seduce his wife.  As scandal erupts into spectacle, the characters reflect, and reflect upon, our fascination with fame, our reliance on gender roles, and our enslavement by sex.
Louise Maske represents every young married woman. Her husband Theo is an unimaginative and completely non-sexual partner with a steady job as a government clerk. Louise likes to stare at her pet bird; Theo likes to complain about money. Life is predictable and boring, until one day Louise loses her underwear in public. Theo collapses on the kitchen table, initiating a series of comic and poignant events, for, as he moans, one should never "underestimate the power of a glimpse of lingerie."
Two men in particular come under the power of Louise's underwear, and rent the Maske's spare bedroom in order to be closer to them. Frank Versati is a flighty poet looking for his muse, whom he believes he has found in the form of Louise with her underwear around her ankles. Louise is ready and willing to fall prey to his sexual prose, but their affair is interrupted by the other renter, Benjamin Cohen, a closet Jew who also fell in love with what was beneath the undergarments. The three, often accompanied by the horny neighbor Gertrude, make a marry dance around the oblivious Theo, who berates the loss of his anonymity and is only pleasantly surprised to find himself with two men willing to pay rent.
